Venice, the most romantic city in the world!!! Though the island which is only 2 miles away from this city, is inhabited one and infamous for its dark past. Even the Italian Government prohibits to enter the Island!! But, the Poveglia island wasn’t always the haunted one. How this beautiful island changed? and became the most Haunted Island in the world with over 1, 60,000 wandering souls over there!! Let’s see how this island changed into a haunted one….
Island is mentioned in the documents dating back to 421 and was flourishing. It was an economic centre until 1371. Due to war, Poveglia was totally destroyed. After that, it has become totally inhabited for centuries until the plague hit the Venice. Due to the drastic situation, an idea of “ Plague Island” came out. Roman found a better way to keep their people safe and curb the disease. They decided to send infected ones to the island away from their land. Isolate the infected one from the healthy one. Nearly, 1,00,000 people were dumped up there to spend their last days of life.
Do you know, the whole island is on the burned ashes and bones of these people. That’s so scary!!! Just by writing about this I got goosebumps! Imagine how the island actually condition would be especially at night.
Italian government decided to make this island to habited one. So, they first decided to make a mental hospital there. But, Alas!! The Doctor who took care of this hospital, conducted all kinds of brutal experiments on residents of the island (like shoving chisels into their brains to see what moved.)
Later, one day the doc eventually tumbled off the bell tower and died. Maybe the plagued ghost or the few tortured souls did the work. He survived the fall but rumour has it that some sort of mist swallowed him upon landing, effectively finishing the job.
The Italian tourism board prohibits visiting the island. Though, you can visit this place by hiring a dude (you have to pay him higher amount) to float you over there, no approval necessary. If you want to experience the haunted one, remember one thing!!
You are not going to set foot on the Island; you are actually going to set foot on the remains of these dead bodies.
